Wood chips are our most economical ground cover: coarse, light tan chips from tree work with rough edges and some needles and small sticks mixed in. They are not a finishing mulch for the front beds, but for paths, utility areas, around sheds, under play equipment that does not need certified surfacing, and for smothering weeds on large areas, nothing beats the price per yard.

- Chips break down slowly and tie up a little nitrogen at the soil surface, so use them on paths and around established trees rather than in vegetable beds.
- Spread 3 to 4 inches for paths; renew every year or two.
- Because they are coarse, chips stay in place in wind and rain better than fine mulch.
